Kenzo`s Paris
I arrived at Kenzo’s Paris headquarters in early June, where I found Nigo hard at work on his brands in a spacious, sunlit office located at the back of the elegant 18 rue Vivienne building.
Nigo was dressed modestly in a grey sweatshirt and jeans, without his usual sunglasses and hat. He looked like a Japanese advertisement for American casual wear from the late 20th century.
Nigo Fashion Background
Nigo’s journey into the fashion industry started small, with a store that only sold a few Bape T-shirts and camouflage print hoodies. In 2002, Nigo released the Bapesta sneaker, which BBC presenter Jonathan Ross called the “epitome of collectable footwear”.
The sneaker is designed similar to Nike’s Air Force 1 style, but instead of the swoosh on the side, it has Nigo’s Bapesta logo. This logo is a star with a lightning zap extending out of it.
Nigo, the Japanese fashion designer, no longer serves the designer of Bape. He established his own company, Nigold, in 2009. In 2005, Nigo partnered with Pharrell Williams to create and launch the streetwear brand Billionaire Boys Club .In 2010, he launched his new brand Human Made.
UT is Uniqlo’s flagship brand, and Nigo became creative director in 2014.
In September 2021, Kenzo appointed Nigo its new artistic director.
