LeAnn Mynatt, Tennessee, experienced chest pain while training for the Cooper River Bridge Run in Charleston, South Carolina, in April 2013. LeAnn received disturbing news after her doctor’s appointment in Charleston. She was diagnosed with stage four ovarian cancer.

After the diagnosis, LeAnn underwent emergency surgery and began six months of chemotherapy. Yes, she fought, and she won. Those who know LeAnn would not be surprised to learn that she completed the Cooper River Bridge Run a year later with shorter hair but an even brighter spirit.

“We numbered 18 total. In support of me, they all ran the race in teal and wore baseball caps. Overall, it was a fantastic experience for all of us. We cried we laughed, we celebrated, and I was overjoyed to run the race I had to miss the year before. Amazing as it was, “On September 23, 2014, LeAnn interviewed Lori Tucker of WATE.

Ovarian Cancer Awareness

In 2014, the Knoxville Office Women’s Initiative decided to plan a fundraiser to support a cause discussed at length. September was chosen because it is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month.

Since teal is the designated color for the ovarian cancer awareness movement, they used that shade for all event invitations and promotional materials. The purpose of this gathering billed as a “Knowledge Event,” was to educate the public and spread awareness not just of ovarian cancer but also of uterine and cervical cancer. The gynecologic cancer community refers to these three diseases as the “Big 3.”

For this reason, the Knoxville Women’s Initiative held a comedy show in LeAnn’s name on September 11 to benefit gynecological cancer research and patient care. UT Medical Center hosted the event, and LeAnn acted as the evening’s emcee. More than 240 people showed up to the event, and there wasn’t a seat to be had.

Teal was the color of choice. Jennifer Keller, a colleague at Baker Donelson, traveled from Johnson City to be there for LeAnn and the occasion. Donations came in from businesses across Knoxville and the non-profit Ijams Nature Center, where LeAnn was a board member at the time of her diagnosis.

The evening was memorable for all who attended but particularly for those whose lives have been touched by gynecologic cancer. It’s not often that an inaugural event is so successful in raising awareness for a worthy cause, but next year we’ll need a larger space.
